Canelo vs Kirkland undercard: Co-feature canceled; Will Taishan Dong fill void?Hot
On the fight card headlined by Canelo Alvarez vs James Kirkland on HBO Saturday night, the originally scheduled televised co-feature between Frankie Gomez and Humberto Soto has been scrapped.
Gomez came in heavy, weighing 2.5 lbs over the maximum of 145 lbs. And while that may not seem like a sufficient enough reason to produce a cancelation, the bout was originally contracted at a maximum of 141 pounds until a deal was recently made with Soto’s team for a four pound adjustment.
“He’s not in the physical condition to fight. He’s seven pounds over,” Golden Boy's Eric Gomez told BoxingScene. “It’s risky. Both fighters can get hurt. We don’t want to be put in the position where we’re fearing for someone’s health."
"Humberto’s willing to go forward, but he wants him to lose a little bit more. Frankie’s in bad shape. He can’t lose anything more.”
Will HBO look to fill that void in air time?
Slated to be on the undercard, seven foot Chinese heavyweight sensation Taishan Dong (3-0, 2 KOs) will join 2012 U.S Olympian Joseph "Jo Jo" Diaz Jr. (15-0, 10 KOs) and former welterweight champion Joshua "Grand Master" Clottey (38-4, 22 KOs).
Although Dong is far less accomplished than Diaz and Clottey, his bout may be selected by HBO to be broadcast.
A promoter's dream, the 7'0" Chinese heavyweight is getting a lot of buzz these days and is already one of the most intriguing fighters in the sport so don't be surprised, or irritated, if Dong's bout gets slated to be on TV, ahead of two presumably more deserving professionals.
