Canelo vs Golovkin location: Jerry Jones' AT&T Stadium the front-runner?

Following Canelo Alvarez's one-sided thrashing of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr last night, the former's showdown with middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin was made official.

“Like I said, this fight is September 16th,” De La Hoya said via BoxingScene.com.

“I’ve already had several calls from around the world, wanting to stage this fight. I literally have a missed call from Dubai. I have a missed call from the UK, where Anthony Joshua and Klitschko just sold out [with] 90,000 people. So there’s interest all over the world. There’s interest from everywhere and those negotiations, those talks will start in the weeks to come – very soon because this fight is September 16th.”

Canelo vs Golovkin location

Will Canelo vs Golovkin take place in the UK?

... Probably not. While over 90,000 packed Wembley Stadium last week to see countryman Anthony Joshua defeat former long-reigning heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, neither Canelo nor Golovkin is British so the fight wouldn't generate the 'special' buzz created by Klitschko vs Joshua. Golovkin vs Canelo would be huge there but not as big as last week's heavyweight showdown.

Will Canelo vs Golovkin take place in Dubai?

.... Probably not. Since 2011, Dubai has been considered as a possible, lucrative location for a superfight but very few, if any, have taken place there. In fact, there were supposedlyserious negotiations to have Manny Pacquiao face Amir Khan or Jeff Horn there this year but PacMan will face the latter in Horn's native Australia.

Dubai always seems to come up short, even in scenarios with a popular Muslim (Amir Khan) in the main event. Perhaps promoters think the location, although ideal in some ways, is too risky.

Jerry Jones' AT&T Stadium

Of course, Las Vegas is always a strong consideration for a superfight but if you're looking for the front-runner to host Canelo vs Golovkin, look no farther than the Dallas suburbs which hosted Alvarez’s ninth-round knockout of England’s Liam Smith last September.

Is it just a coincidence the Dallas Cowboys are playing in Denver the weekend of September 16?

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, a boxing fan himself, has been lobbying to host Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin vs Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez since last fall. And yes, the charismatic, sometimes controversial businessman has previously hosted Manny Pacquiao's bouts against Josh Clottey and Antonio Margarito in 2010.

AT&T Stadium fast facts

  • Capacity: 100,000
  • AT&T Stadium is visible 5 miles away on Interstate 30 and can be seen from tall buildings in Dallas, about 18 miles away. It often is called the "Death Star" because of its enormity, a tribute to the planet-destroying space station in "Star Wars.''
  • The stadium fills up 73 acres, or 3 million square feet.
  • Texans also call Cowboys Stadium the Jerry Dome in honor of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
  • AT&T Stadium has one of the world’s largest high-definition video screens
  • It has a 14,000-plus ton retractable roof that opens or closes in 12 minutes
  • Four thousand people have paid $200 each to stand outside of the stadium and watch the game on big screen.
  • 15,000 Club seats that offer extra amenities to guests at any of the stadium’s 10 VIP clubs
  • Concession stands that offer fire-roasted turkey burgers, gourmet nachos, sushi, and dozens of other out-of-the-ordinary menu items

And while the location is still under consideration, GGG's promoter, Tom Loeffler, hinted to TMZ last fall there was a fair chance of Golovkin vs Canelo taking place at the mammoth, state-of-the-art complex.

"GGG will fight anywhere, but he's aware of Jerry Jones and the atmosphere in his stadium. Whenever Jerry Jones gets involved, he takes promotion to a new level."

"You hear 70,000 people screaming ... the huge video board... it's an amazing venue. And GGG understands the popularity of the Cowboys, the influence they have in the U.S. and around the world."
