Canelo Alvarez vs Saunders prediction: Kelly Pavlik is decisive

Will Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders ever be confirmed? It's March 10 and Canelo has yet to make his May 2nd opponent official.

All indications are the fight will happen. Let's hope it's official soon.

Should Canelo vs Saunders happen some, like Adrien Broner, insist the style match-up would be wrong for Alvarez due to Saunders's height and reach, speed, defense and overall boxing ability. However, not everyone is convinced Saunders has the right tonic to defeat the world's most popular fighter.

Enter Kelly Pavlik, a former lineal middleweight champion who faced the likes of Bernard Hopkins and Sergio Martinez, and defeated Jermain Taylor, Edison Miranda, Bronco McKart and Marco Antonio Rubio.

Given he enjoyed success at 160 and 168, few are as qualified as Pavlik to predict Canelo vs Saunders. After all, Canelo is the lineal middleweight champion who won a light heavyweight title in November and will (hopefully) be targeting Saunders' WBO super middleweight belt in May.

Kelly Pavlik's Canelo vs Saunders prediction...

"I got Canelo," Pavlik told Fight Hub TV.

"Listen, Canelo could knockout the Incredible Hulk and somebody will [say], 'Oh the Incredible Hulk was just off that night."

"...Canelo doesn't get the credit he deserves."

"... I think Billy Joe Saunders is a dangerous fight but I'm still leaning with Canelo. I think the style Saunders is going to fight is going to play right into Canelo, especially the body attack and everything else that Canelo does."

"I think it's a big opportunity and a big fight and I think Canelo wins that."

The interviewer wisely mentioned Canelo's 2014 fight with Erislandy Lara who, like Saunders, is a slippery, defensive-minded southpaw. Canelo Alvarez won a split decision but some thought Lara had outboxed his foe.

The average score from 89 media members scorecards was 114-114. Alvarez won on 34 scorecards, Lara won on 30, and the remaining 25 were scored a draw.

"I think Billy Joe Saunders tries to fight like Sergio Martinez (not so much like Lara)," Pavlik replied.

"I think it's the same exact style [but] I don't think he's as good at it."

"He looked a little sluggish in his last fight and if he fights like that against Canelo, I think it'll be a quick night."
