Canelo Alvarez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr prediction: "He'll bring my genes"

Fight legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., father and adviser to his son, Julio Jr, is confident his son will emerge triumphant on May 6 when the latter faces superstar Canelo Alvarez.

Chavez Sr's prediction: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr will "close a lot of mouths" on May 6.

The elder Chavez insists his son is motivated for this fight and determined to prove the naysayers wrong.

A solid underdog, former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) has been criticized for his apparent lack of discipline and focus.

Chavez Jr was red hot until he tasted defeat for the first time against Sergio Martinez in September 2012. Since then, he's had problems making weight and getting in top shape, and has subsequently underfperformed in the ring.

Julio is 4-2 in his last six bouts but could arguably be 3-3 as his first win against Brian Vera was highly disputable. As a result, it's no surprise Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) is the favorite.

But not everyone is convinced Chavez Jr will be easy pickins for Canelo. In fact, WBC Lightweight Champion Mikey Garcia and his brother/trainer Roberto, like Chavez's chances in this bout - and they are not alone.

"Julio has to win," an inflamed Chavez Sr told Subaran.

"They say that he has always been protected and that he does not bring anything of mine [to the ring] and that he uses marijuana and a lot of other sh*t they have talked about, so it is time to make them cover their noses over all the sh*t that they have said about his career."

"My son is aware of the importance, that he can not lose this fight."

But what about the catchweight limit of 164.5 lbs? Can Julio Jr get that low again? And if so, will he be strong at that weight?

Julio's weight problems are well-known. If he couldn't make 164.5 lbs three years ago at 27, how is he going to do it, comfortably, at 30?

"The fight comes at a good time and the people at Golden Boy think Julio is f***ed and will struggle to make weight because of his history of indiscipline and let them think that, because it is the right time to show everyone that this time Julio will not only bring the surname [to the ring], but he will also bring my genes," added the boxing great.

Julio Cesar Chavez Sr seems to be taking criticism of his son personally, and appears determined to will his son a victory.

When Junior steps into the ring, he will not only be fighting for himself, he'll be fighting for his father and, in some ways, his father's legacy.
