Canelo Alvarez: "This is probably my last fight at 154 lbs"

With less than 30 days remaining until his WBO title fight against incumbent Super Welterweight champion Liam Smith, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is busy putting the finishing touches on his preparation in Southern California. In a recent interview with FightHype.com, the 26 year old fighter discussed how productive his training camp has been for this assignment.

"Very good, I feel very good," Canelo stated to FightHype.com. "We've been training very hard. We know it's going to be a hard fight due to Liam's style, which is to come forward and throw punches. He's a fighter with good combinations, so we are preparing for a hard fight."

Despite being a virtual unknown among fight fans in North America, Canelo Alvarez believes the visiting champion is worthy of his WBO distinction and will provide a much greater challenge than most believe. The Mexican born favorite is expecting an entertaining, competitive, and difficult bout.

"Just because he's not (well) known doesn't mean it's not going to be a tough fight or he's not a tough fighter. We know he's a tough opponent, and thank God we know it's going to be a tough fight. We know what he brings. That's why we're preparing for whatever he presents in the ring and there won't be any surprises."

With Alvarez moving back down to compete at 154 pounds for the first time since 2013, many have questioned the current lineal Middleweight champion's ability to make the Super Welterweight limit comfortably. Will Canelo Alvarez be as strong at 154 pounds, and does this mean the former WBC/WBA Junior Middleweight champion has plans to stay in this division throughout the remainder of 2016 and possibly beyond?

Canelo gave a surprisingly resolute response.

"The weight and dieting is always very difficult," admitted the two division world champion. "It's always hard, but we have the experience. And even if it's difficult, it won't complicate things for us. Obviously we are professionals and we'll make weight."

"But we're thinking this is probably the last fight at 154 pounds. Right now we're only thinking of this fight, but yes…that's the idea. I feel comfortable, and can make the weight, but I think I will feel much more comfortable moving up to the next weight class."

So although Canelo's most recent crop of detractors have projected a lengthy Super Welterweight campaign for Ring Magazine's recognized 160 pound champ, it seems that the September 17 event opposite Liam Smith in Arlington, Texas, will mark the final bout for Alvarez within the 154 pound weight division.
