Canelo Alvarez: Next fight against Canadian KO artist?Hot
If things go according to planned for team Canelo, its fighter should be back in the ring early next year.
The Mexican was patient, didn't waste many shots and showed a good beard and fine defensive prowess.
In sum, it was a quality performance and one that earned the Alvarez the WBO jr middleweight strap. Moreover, the fight card drew over 50,000 fans and was, on some level, a moderate success given Smith was an unknown quantity in the States.
So who will Canelo Alvarez fight next?
Unfortunately, it won't be Gennady Golovkin. Should that bout happen next year, it's likely to take place in September or later next fall.
At this moment, the obvious pick is David Lemieux 35-3, 32 KO.
Both Canelo and Lemieux are promoted by Golden Boy Promotions so pairing the fighters would mean a win-win for the company. Hence, it wouldn't have to negotiate nor share revenue with another promotional outfit.
Second, Lemieux has a solid fan base in Canada so Canelo Alvarez vs Lemieux would likely get a lot of exposure.
And third, David is a former middleweight title-holder as well as a respected fighter and action-packed knockout artist who would add intrigue and excitement to the main event.
Sure, he lost to Golovkin a year ago but Gennady, arguably the most fearsome fighter in the sport, fought, early on, with less aggression than we are accustomed to seeing because he was wary of David's power.
Against David Lemieux, we saw Golovkin use his jab and underrated boxing skills to soften his foe early before eventually overpowering the fading Canadian.
Golovkin respected Lemieux's power and it would be wise for Canelo to do the same should they fight each other next year.
In addition to his punching power, the Canadian boasts a quality beard and true grit. What he appears to lack, however, are the technical skills to deal with elite-level opponents who can box.
Should David conquer Cristian Fabian Rios (21-7-3) next month, don’t be surprised if the former becomes Canelo Alvarez's new next fight foe.
