Jack Johnson, named by some historians as the single most important athlete in modern sports history, was the first black man to win the World Heavyweight Championship and is considered an all-time great.
In defeating tommy Burns for the title in 1908, Johnson delivered one of the most one-sided beatings in heavyweight championship history.. Burns fought bravely but the police stopped the proceedings during the 14th Round.
Johnson revolutionized boxing with his movement and feints. Prior to his rise, the sport was primarily marked brawling; He was fast, possessed an outstanding jab and uppercut, and was practically impossible to hit cleanly.
Johnson fought professionally until the at least the age of 52.
Some reports suggest Jack Johnson fought professionally until 1938 at age of 60. And while there's photographic data to support he did step in the ring during that period, we can't confirm the legitimacy of those bouts because he allegedly engaged in "cellar" fighting, unadvertised bouts in the underground circuit for private audiences. Hence, maybe those fights were staged and maybe they weren't.
Jack Johnson fought three exhibitions in 1944 before famously stepping back into the ring one last time in November 27, 1945 at the age of 67. Both three-round exhibitions, held in New York City, took place to promote U.S. war bonds. He faced 66-year-old Joe Jeannette, also a boxing legend, and John Ballcort.

Johnson was the child of slaves who had been freed during the Civil War.
Raised in a penniless family, he had little schooling as a child and spent his teenage years working as a laborer on the docks of Galveston, Texas. To earn side money, he occasionally took on fellow workers and local toughs in back-room brawls for a pot of money offered by onlookers.
He is also said to have participated in the infamous "battle royals," racist spectacles during which several African Americans were blindfolded and set to fighting one another to the finish. The last man standing won a collection of pocket money from spectators.
Johnson was an early example of the modern celebrity athlete in the modern era, appearing regularly in the press and later on radio and in motion pictures.
He earned considerable sums endorsing various products and indulged in expensive hobbies, such as automobile racing and expensive dressing.
Johnson constantly flouted conventions regarding the social and economic "place" of Blacks in American society. As a Black man, he broke a powerful taboo in consorting with white women, and would constantly and arrogantly taunt men (both white and black) inside and outside the ring.
Despite racial segregation and discrimination being the 'law of the land,' ,especially in his native Texas, Johnson had a succession of three white wives.
After his boxing career, while in jail on frivolous charges, Johnson found need for a tool that would help tighten loosened fastening devices, and modified a wrench for the task. He patented his improvements on April 18, 1922, as US Patent 1,413,121.
Johnson, aged 68, was killed in a car accident in 1946.
