Charr vs Ustinov: Stats, facts and highlights

Written by

Talk about a stretch.

Germany's Manuel Charr (31-4, 17 KOs) and Russia's Alexander Ustinov (34-2, 25 KOs) fought for something called the WBA 'Regular' Heavyweight title. Of course, that's not to be confused with the WBA 'Super' Title current held by Anthony Joshua.

In the end, Charr had his hand raised after twelve rounds and joins Joshua, Deontay Wilder and Joseph Parker as the owner of a heavyweight belt representative of a major sanctioning body.

And this is what's wrong with boxing.

There was decent action as Ustinov asserted himself well early on before Charr mounted a small comeback of sorts.

In Round 7, Charr unleashed heavy artillery and appeared to have Ustinov on queer street but Alexander hung in there. And at the end of Round 8, a more confident Charr, gaining in momentum, floored Ustinov with a hard left hook, cutting the latter's eye in the process.

Charr would win the following round as Ustinov appeared the less fresher of the two.

In the end, Charr, even without the knockdown, would have still edged Ustinov who appeared to fade late.

Charr's mandatory is 44 year old Fres Oquendo.

It'll be interesting to see how or if Charr figures into the heavyweight picture.
