Top promoter forecasts Wilder to defeat Joshua

Written by

Like many, promoter Frank Warren was mightily impressed by Deontay Wilder's KO streak heading into his 2015 title bout with Bermane Stiverne. And like many, he hasn't been awed by Wilder's title defenses previous to the Stiverne rematch last week.

"When Wilder won the world title against Bermane Stiverne in 2015, I thought he really boxed well and showed he had a very strong engine.

"He showed heart and he took a good few punches from Stiverne on the chin," Warren wrote on BoxingScene.com via The Daily Star.

"But, in his subsequent fights he has looked very, very average."

"True, he has knocked the guys out in those follow-up fights, but he hasn’t looked fantastic."

That stated, Warren believes Joshua would be vulnerable to Wilder's big shots because we've seen Anthony rattled by Dillian Whyte and hurt and floored by Wladimir Klitschko. In fact, Warren hinted Joshua Takam, AJ's most recent opponent who took the fight on 12 days notice, was able to connect on Joshua easier than he should have.

"If Wilder fought Joshua over here, AJ would be favorite but I would just go for the American.I feel anyone who catches Joshua would cause him a problem."

"It would be close, but my money would be on Wilder."

We've never seen Wilder in trouble. Sure, he's been knocked off balance a few times but we've never seen him have to dig deep.

Perhaps Deontay's defensive prowess is underrated? After all, in 39 fights he's never allowed an opponent to hurt him.

Warren, a leading figure in British boxing, has been promoting since the 1980s and has managed some of Britain's best boxers of the last twenty-five years, including 'Prince' Naseem Hamed, Nigel Benn, Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton, Dereck Chisora, Nicky Piper and Amir Khan.
