Canelo vs GGG PPV numbers: 'Mayweather vs McGregor helped'

Written by

When the date for Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor was announced, some predicted it would negatively impact PPV buys for Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin, boxing's true superfight which was taking place three weeks later.

Why?

A lot of fans don't like ordering expensive pay-per-view events in such close proximity. And given the popularity of the Mayweather vs McGregor super spectacle was first, there's real concern fans who purchased the bout will have exhausted their PPV budget come September 16.

Given the level of excitement and satisfaction Mayweather vs McGregor generated, however, some surmise it might help Golovkin vs GGG PPV numbers.

"Initially if you had asked me before the fight, I would have probably hurt it [Mayweather vs McGregor] probably would have hurt it [Canelo vs GGG]," promoter Richard Schaefer told FightHype.com.

"The fact that it was such a success and people were so happy about the result and the entertainment value, I actually think it helps it now,"

"... These are people who had a positive experience....I think they are going to be encouraged by the fact they had such a great experience."

Floyd Mayweather said he wanted to give the fans a show and he did just that. And to his credit, no one is complaining about getting ripped off.

It was a "fun" night for casual fans and Conor showed some grit but in the end, Floyd did it his way. He chose to give fans their money's worth... And no one complained.

And while it would probably difficult to find out the true impact of the Mayweather fight on next week's bout, Richard Schaefer made some good points. Entertainment value means a lot and it's always a lot easier to pay for something that is likely to be fun.

Perhaps Mayweather vs McGregor has made fans forget about last spring's superfight between Canelo and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr? After all, fans can have short memories.

While I'm not sure how much the Mayweather fight helps Canelo vs GGG, it certainly won't hurt it.

Casaul fans of baseball love home runs and double plays while basketball's casual fans want to see reverse lay-ups, slam dunks and fast breaks.  And let's not forget fottball's casual fans who love long bombs, quarterback sacks and intense 4th and 1 situations.

Boxing's casual fans are no different in they want want to see a lot of offense and stoppages. They like drama and Mayweather vs McGregor gave us that.

Let's hope Canelo vs GGG provides entertainment for the casual and hardcore fan.
