Margarito vs Jones: Results, highlightsWritten by Lee Cleveland
Antonio Margarito (41-8, 27 KO) won a technical decision over American Carson Jones (41-12-3, 30 KO) tonight but his dream of facing rival Miguel Cotto might be limbo.
Antonio looked sluggish and suffered a nasty cut via an accidental headbutt over his right eye which had already been comprised earlier in his career.
The end came after round 7 as Margarito could no longer continue. Given the cut was caused by a butt and not a punch, the fight was halted and they went to the scorecards. All three judges had Margarito ahead, 67-65, 68-64 and 67-65.
Jones was deducted a point for the headbutt.
At the time of the stoppage, Jones had been coming on strong while Antonio had faded quite a bit.
More details are forthcoming...
I thought the crowd would help lift Margarito to a hard-earned, narrow decision win. And near the end of Round 7, they did roar...MAR-GARI-TO...MAR-GARI-TO.
Antonio entered this bout a mere 3-3 in the past 8 years. Of course, all three of those losses came at the hands of elite-level stars Shane Mosley, Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto. And while there's certainly no shame in losing to those guys, Margarito hadn't sizzled in his three wins against mid-tier opposition.
Some of the bookies had Margarito vs Jones a pure toss-up.
Other results on that card....
Canelo's brother, super welterweight Ramón “Inocente” Álvarez (24-6-3, 16 KOs), and Johnny “Vaquero” Navarrete (33-10-2, 15 KOs) fought to an eight round draw.
Rising super welterweight Jaime Munguía (25-0, 21 KOs) scored a sweet second round KO over Uriel “Big Bang” Gonzalez (16-2-1, 12 KOs).
