Mayweather vs McGregor sparring: Lomachenko's assistance would threaten boutWritten by Lee Cleveland
Conor McGregor, weeks ahead of his superfight with Floyd Mayweather, refused Vasyl Lomachenko's offer to help him in training camp.
Lomachenko, considered by many as one of the best 4 or 5 boxers in the world pound-for-pound, expressed interest in sparring with Conor following Paul Malignaggi's departure.
McGregor replied via social media stating:
“First of all, he’s 120 pounds. Second of all he’s a southpaw,” McGregor said when asked about Lomachenko on Friday.
“He’s pretty skilled but he’s not applicable for this camp.”
And Shaq is 'kind of' large?
Is McGregor not aware a fighter of Lomachenko's pedigree can give him a good look sparring in a southpaw or orthodox stance?
Does he really think Lomachenko, a southpaw, would be compromised sparring via an orthodox stance? Even when sparring in an orthodox stance, Lomachenko would be ten times better than any sparring partner McGregor has.
Nevertheless, McGregor sparring Lomachenko is probably a bad idea anyway.
If Conor tried to bully Lomachenko in sparring the same way he tried to bully Paulie, that "120 lb guy" would not only knock him out, but unleash some serious brutality on McGregor and likely put his fight with Floyd Mayweather in jeopardy.
Malignaggi, a legitimate former champion who is well past his prime, is a nicer guy than Vasyl who is in his prime and a better fighter than Malignaggi ever was. Moreover, as a Showtime employee, Paulie has a vested interest in Mayweather vs McGregor so he's not going to jeopardize the fight.
Conor, stay away from Lomachenko. You want no part of that.
