Oleksandr Usyk vs Marco Huck date, odds

Written by

Despite having only 12 professional fights, 30-year-old Oleksandr Usyk is considered by many, including, RING Magazine, the world's best cruiserweight despite his having only 11 pro fights.

He was, of course, a Gold medalist in the heavyweight division at the 2012 Olympics and boasts a strong amateur pedigree.  Also, as an amateur, Usyk won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics, as well as bronze and gold at the 2009 and 2011 World Championships respectively, all in the heavyweight division.

On September 9, Usyk will face the biggest name in the division over the last 6 years - Marco Huck (45-4, 27 KO) who is the second longest reigning cruiserweight world champion of all time, having held the WBO title from 2009 to 2015, making thirteen consecutive successful defenses.

Can Usyk defeat his more experienced, more accomplished foe?

Oddsmakers think so.

Oleksandr Usyk   1/25
Marco Huck        34/5

Why is Usyk such a heavy favorite?

For starters, bettors like his strong amateur pedigree and believe he's more technically sound. Moreover, he soundly defeated unbeaten Krzysztof Głowacki (then 26-0, 16 KOs) to win his WBO Cruiserweight championship last year. Głowacki, of course, was fresh off a knockout win over long-reigning champ Marco Huck.

Venue: Max Schmeling Halle
Title: WBO

The 32 year old Huck, on the other hand, has lost 2 of his last 4 fights and seems to be slipping. In 2015, Głowacki knocked out a tiring Huck, who was narrowly ahead on points, in the 11th Round. And in Marco's most recent bout in April, he was solidly outpointed by Mairis Breidis (then 21-0, 18 KOs).

I like Usyk via a wide unanimous decision.
