Canelo vs Chavez Jr: Big Fight PreviewWritten by Joseph Herron
This Cinco de Mayo weekend on the Vegas strip, Saul "Canelo Alvarez will test his "Super" Middleweight mettle against a "164 pound" version of former WBC titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in front of a capacity crowd at the T-Mobile Arena!!

The two "popular" Mexican combatants weren't exactly the peoples' choice for a headlining match-up during the holiday weekend. But the ticket sales for this Saturday night's showdown indicate that the style clash, mixed with the numerous questions surrounding both fighters, equates to an interesting match-up with many intriguing storylines.
- Will Canelo carry his customary power up to the Super Middleweight division?
- Will the added weight help or hinder Alvarez's chances for a big victory?
- Can Chavez Jr. make the weight limit of 164 comfortably?
- Will the training tandem of Ignacio Beristain and Memo Heredia make a difference for Chavez Jr.?
- Is JCC Jr. on Canelo's level, and which fighter does the style match-up favor?
The unexpected pairing is a classic "bull vs matador" scenario, with Canelo adopting his customary role as the sharp-shooting counter puncher, and Junior more than likely implementing his come-foward style of relentless pressure.
Will Julio's chin be able to handle the explosive power of Alvarez's creative combination punching? And can Canelo afford to take moments off between flurries against Chavez's pressure style?
Although the current 154 pound WBO champ will enter the bout as a 7 to 1 betting favorite, were the handicappers and ring experts justified in assessing this match-up with such long odds? Should Canelo be listed as such a sizable favorite in such a heavy weight division, and against such a "large" opponent?
Fight fans will get to find out this Saturday night on HBO PPV!!
