McGrefor vs Alvarez undercard preview
(C) Tyron Woodley vs Stephen Thompson: UFC Welterweight Championship
Tyron Woodley is set to make his first title defense since knocking out Robbie Lawler towin the title in August. Standing in his way is the Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson, a diverse and complex karate fighter who has had great success in the UFC.
This is your classic grappler (Woodley) vs striker (Thompson) matchup. Woodley is the perfect type of opponent to beat Thompson, but so were Johnny Hendricks, Rory MacDonald, and Jake Ellenberger, and they were all beaten soundly by Thompson.
Thompson is a very fun style to watch, he throws a lot of wild strikes but with beautiful technique.
It is going to be Woodley's job to make this fight dirty and try to capitalize on Thompson's mistakes and silence the doubters who have made him a near 2-1 underdog.
Joanna Jederzejczyk (C) vs Karolina Kowalkiewicz: UFC Women's Straweight Champion
Jederzejczyk is one of the most vicious fighter's in MMA, she has done nothing but dominate foes in the UFC in emphatic fashion. Coming from a Muay Thai background, Jederzejczyk transioned perfectly into MMA.
Her opponent is a familiar foe in Kowalkiewicz as they previously met as amateurs in their native Poland in 2012. In that fight, Jederzejczyk submitted Karolina with a rear-naked choke.
Karolina signed with the UFC in 2015 and also comes from a Muay Thai background. She scored an upset victory against then-regarded #1 contender Rose Namajunas earning her a title shot.
It's pretty interesting that there's going to be a UFC title fight between two fighters from Poland... Just goes to show the sport is growing internationally.
Chris Weidman vs Yoel Romero: Possible #1 Middleweight Contender fight
This is a super interesting fight and could be the most intriguing of the evening. Chris Weidman, as most know, knocked out Anderson Silva twice (technically,) and was the UFC Middleweight champion before losing his belt to Luke Rockhold.
Yoel Romero is a Cuban born Wrestler who was an Olympic Silver medalist in 2004. He is the brother of boxing's cruiserweight star Yoan Pablo Hernandez. He's one of the most contentious fighters in MMA due to a falied drug test and fights that have often had controversial moments.
The winner of this fight will likely fight Middleweight champion Michael Bisping.
Miesha Tate vs Raquel Pennington:
Miesha Tate also returns on the McGregor vs Alvarez undercard. She is coming off of her title defeat to Amanda Nunes, and is looking to rebound against Raquel Pennington. Pennington is a solid fighter who always puts on a good show. Remember her solid performance against Holly Holm last year?
UFC Prelims: 8:00pm (Fox Sports 1)
Frankie Edgar vs Jeremy Stephens:
What a fight right here! Frankie Edgar is a 2x Featherweight title challenger and former Lightweight champion. His opponent Jeremy Stephens is one of the most powerful strikers in the UFC. This should be an excellent fight and very important for the Featherweight title picture.
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Michael Johnson: Possible #1 Lightweight contender fight
The winner of Johnson vs Nurmagomedov is very important to the Lightweight title picture. Nurmagomedov is undefeated at 22-0 in MMA and is considered one of the most feared fighters in the sport. But Johnson is a very good opponent who has been in the cage with some of the best including Nate Diaz, Dustin Poirier, and Edson Barboza.
The winner of this fight very well could fight Conor McGregor or Eddie Alvarez next.
Other fight's on the McGregor vs Alvarez undercard:
-Rafael Natal and Tim Boetsch (FS1): Fun fight, two guys who will leave it all on the line
-Belal Muhammad vs Vicente Luque (FS1) Belal is a big time prospect
-Thiago Alves vs Jim Miller (Fight Pass): Two UFC OG's, Alves did miss weight, fight is catchweight
-Liz Carmouche vs Katlyn Chookagian (Fight Pass): Chookagian is a decent prospect
