James Toney climbs back in the ring Saturday night

Written by

Tonight, 46 year old fight great and former multi-division world champion James “Lights out” Toney (76-9-3, 46 KOs) will step into the ring for the first time in two years when he faces 40 year old Charles Ellis (9-3-1).

Toney vs Ellis will happen at Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St Louis, Missouri.

The future hall of famer, who was rumored to be in negotiations to face sports legend Mike Tyson earlier this summer, told FightNews he's been training hard for the last six or seven months.

"I wish I could go right to the world title fight right now," Toney informed FightNews.

"My team feels I should move a bit slower and honestly they are right. We will start off with this first fight Saturday. I don’t know anything about my opponent, but I know I am in tremendous shape."

"St Louis fans are going to see a well prepared James Toney."

Approaching 47, does Toney have yet one more surprise for fans? And will he continue to campaign for big fights against top-level opposition should Tyson stay retired?

When queried last month about the possibility of facing Tyson, Toney told legendary sports reporter Elie Seckbach of ES News:

"Right now, I'm very dangerous."

"If I would have fought Tyson then [in the late 1990s/early early 2000s], I would have knocked him out and if I fought Tyson now I'd definitely knock him out."

"Everybody knows I'm the better of us two."

"I'm the greatest defensive fighter of all-time."

Can the 5'10" Toney make waves in the heavyweight division?

Keep in mind, Lucas Browne (then 15-0, 14 KOs) soundly defeated James in April 2013 in what many believed would be the latter's swan song. And James also dropped a less consequential three-rounder to journeyman Jason Gavern months later in the UK's famed Prizefighter Tournament.

So ho the heck is James Toney fighting tonight, again?

Forty year old Charles Ellis (9-3-1, 8 KO) is a 6'5" heavyweight from Wichita, Kansas who is 3-3 in his last six bouts. Most recently, Ellis fought in December 2014 and dropped a unanimous verdict to a fella who was 9-0.

He's been stopped once in twelve fights.
