Gary Russell, Jr. lifts WBC featherweight title from GonzalezWritten by Dion Hall
With a world class display of speed and power, Gary Russell Jr looked to get a measure of redemption as he dismantled KO artist Jhonny Gonzalez in four rounds last night to claim the WBC featherweight title.
Russell Jr, who had previously faced a lot of criticism for defeating perceived low level of competition, certainly marked his territory tonight.
Last year, in his first bout against a marquee opponent, Russell Jr would come up short against the supremely-gifted Vasyl Lomachenko. But tonight, Russell put any lingering doubts to rest as he broke down Jhonny Gonzalez, proving he's an elite-level featherweight.
Russell Jr's speed was on display as early as Round 1, and it was instantly apparent the champion had his hands full.
After a formidable second round, the beginning of the end was apparent for Gonzalez. Russell Jr was now unleasing with conviction as he landed a sharp counter conbo to drop his foe who had entered the bout with the reputation of "the puncher" tonight.
In what would be the final round, Russell Jr sat in the pocket and continued to throw shots with conviction, eventually knocking out Gonzalez to earn the WBC featherweight title.
Tonight, Russell Jr showed true power against top level competition, as well as blinding speed. That combination of skills should propel the new WBC featherweight champ near the top of the division.
