Brandon Rios rips Alvarado in 3: Stats tell the story

Written by
Tonight, from the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado, "Mile High" Mike Alvarado (34-4, 23 KOs) faced arch rival Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios (33-2-1, 24 KOs) for the third time.
Unlike their previous bouts, which were contested at super lightweight (140 lbs), tonight's bout was fought at welterweight (147 lbs).

.... And unlike the first two meetings, which offered moments resembling a Rocky movie, tonight's affair was a one-sided demolition.

Brandon pounced on Alvarado from the opening bell, winning the first round decisively before pounding his foe from pillar to post in Round 2. Rios' domination was so thorough, the round could - or should - have been scored 10-8.

And Round 3 was a more brutal continuation of the second stanza as Rios badly hurt and floored the hometown fighter who arose at the count of nine and managed to survive the round.

The fight was stopped after round three when Alvarado failed to correctly answer the ring doctor's questions.

Rios, who couldn't miss, looked monstrous tonight while Alvarado appeared tentative, unsure of himself and out of his element.

CompuBox stats told us Rios landed 120 of 290 punches (nearly all powershots) while Alvarado connected on just 20 of 87.

The fight was a revival of sorts for Brandon Rios who was need of an impressive victory and got, perhaps, even more than he bargained for.

"I'm back," Brandon yelled jubilantly after the stoppage.

Defiant but gracious in defeat, Alvarado stated, "I'm not done yet. At all. I'm far from being at my best. I will be back. I guarantee to everyone in this place. I will be back."
