Mayweather vs Ortiz PPV Results Confirm Mayweather's StockWritten by Lee Cleveland
Mayweather vs Ortiz generates 1.25 Million PPV buys.
According to FightNews.com, preliminary indications confirm Golden Boy's card featuring Floyd Mayweather against Victor Ortiz as the main event on September 17 generated approximately 1.25 million buys from homes which totaled pay-per-view revenue of $78,440,000 USD.
Golden Boy CEO, Richard Schaefer, had predicted roughly 1.4 million buys in the weeks leading up to the bout and initial reports, which turned out to be inaccurate, were that the fight only garnered 850,000 buys.
The HBO PPV fight named "Star Power," which also showcased Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Erik Morales is third all-time among non-heavyweight pay-per-views for revenue. However, although the number of buys were relatively the same as Pacquiao vs De La Hoya (2008) and Mayweather vs Mosley (2010), Mayweather vs Ortiz surpassed those bouts in revenue because it sold at a higher price ($59.95 USD).
Mayweather has participated in three of the biggest non-heavyweight, revenue-generating pay-per-view events combat sport's history:
- Mayweather vs. Oscar De La Hoya ($136,853,700 USD)
- Mayweather vs. Ortiz ($78,440,000 USD) and
- Mayweather vs. Sugar Shane Mosley ($78,330,000 USD)
"My motto is 'hard work and dedication' and I have shown this throughout my entire career, which has allowed me to go out and perform each time I step in the ring," said Mayweather. "I give the fans everything I have with the best competition and exciting fights. I must be doing something right as they keep buying my fights and I appreciate their tremendous support. It feels good to be able to generate such a great interest in the sport."
